Racial Healing Pilgrimage: The Scottsboro Boys

Apr 05, 2025, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Scottsboro Boys Museum, 428 W Willow St, Scottsboro, AL 35768, USA
Many remain unaware of the true story of the Scottsboro Boys, a case that exposes deep injustices in our history and challenges us to recognize injustice today. We invite you to join this pilgrimage—not just to learn, but to open our eyes and hearts to the ongoing struggle for justice. If we do not acknowledge the past, how will we ever recognize injustice in our time? Pilgrimages were once a vital part of Christian faith, and we invite you to embrace this journey as a spiritual practice.
Our pilgrimage will begin at Saint Luke's Episcopal Church and walk to The Scottsboro Boys Museum, located in the historic Joyce Chapel, with a procession leading us to three sites along the way: A Garden of Hope, now a place of reflection but once the site of the jail where the young men were held. A mural dedicated to the Scottsboro Boys, and The Jackson county Courthouse Square where an historical marker is laid commemorating the Scottsboro Boys Trial. We conclude our journey with a short service at the museum. See the map below. The Scottsboro Boys Museum will be open for tours starting at 10:00 a.m. and following the service.
The Pilgrimage will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the nave at Saint Luke's. Please park at or near Saint Luke's Episcopal Church at 402 Scott Street. A shuttle bus will be available to take you back to the church from the museum at the end. For more information or to register, please visit the Diocese website by clicking HERE.
